Anime Fangirling: Fire Force

ETA: SEASON 2 Fire Force info below…

I became obsessed with Fire Force (炎炎ノ消防隊) on my last trip to Japan. There was a giant display at Anime Japan and I was immediately drawn to it. I cannot explain why – the visuals really appealed to me. The show was just being announced at the convention so there wasn’t much information on it.

The fiery visuals were really striking and caught my attention. We weren’t supposed to be taking photos but I snuck the one above. The show is now playing on Crunchy Roll and premiered at Anime Expo here in the US.

Here is the synopsis:

Tokyo is burning, and citizens are mysteriously suffering from spontaneous human combustion all throughout the city! Responsible for snuffing out this inferno is the Fire Force, and Shinra is ready to join their fight. Now, as part of Company 8, he’ll use his devil’s footprints to help keep the city from turning to ash! But his past and a burning secret behind the scenes could set everything ablaze

The opening, which is what played on screens at Anime Japan, is stunning:

The show is based on a serial from Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen_Magazine that started in 2015. I have not read the series but I may now.

The characters are really interesting and there is a mystery about our Main character’s, Shinra’s, past interactions with the Infernals that the Fire Force battles. The first few episodes are really about establishing the characters and factions of the overall Fire Force universe. As you hit episode four, the main tension of the story really begins to unfold. In Episode 3, you get introduced to other Fire Teams and in Episode 4 you really started to see some interesting interactions with other characters.

The tragic fire at Kyoto Animation paused the series in the US and Japan as people processed the events and began to recover in the industry.

SEASON 2 just finished airing in the US and it is AWESOME! You get to learn more about the history of the world this season and it really keeps you on your toes.

My favorite part of the season is a small arch where the team goes to another country to research more historical sites.

Have you seen Fire Force? What do you think?
