The hexagon sweater of pinkness

I made this hexagon sweater last year after I got an itch to expand my crochet skills and make something more wearable than a scarf or beanie hat. It took me a long time and I made a ton of mistakes but it was super fun to and was awesome to finish something I could wear. The Day Date sweater from Make and Do Crew is really fun. The sweater is made up of two hexagons and the sleeves are incorporated into the pattern so all you have to make are cuffs. It has really clear instructions and if you really want to print it our, they offer a printable pattern for a small fee.

The yarn they suggested for the pattern is no longer available, so I subbed in a different yarn, which was my first mistake. I picked a yarn that was a heavier weight so I ended up with a giant sweater…

I had to frog back about six inches off each side if the hexagon to get it to not be a blanket. It’s really big and cozy to hang out in. I pretty much wore it and another sweater I made in rotation all winter. Found the biggest mistake of the whole affair as I went to sew up the sides. The second half of the sweater worked up a LOT faster than the first half. I pinned the first sleeve half together really quickly but when I went to do the second, it just would not fold properly at all! I figured out quickly when I started to count the sides….

…that’s not a hexagon… I had to completely re-make the second half of the sweater but I finally got it together! Here is the front:

It’s a giant hexagon sweater and super squishy and soft. I used Caron Simply Soft in Neon Pink top make this sucker. I think I bought 6 skeins and had tons left over after frogging. Husband noted that I am not difficult to spot in a crowd wearing it!

I posted a simplified version of this on Lettuce Craft.
