The Rising of the Shield Hero is one of the better anime “I died and woke up in another world” shows, AKA: isekai. It’s an interesting tale, since most of the stories start with the main character being super amazing at something that revolutionizes the world they end up in eventually, but that isn’t the case with our guy. The poor lead character basically has to start from zero in a the most bizarre ways possible. He gets the only defensive piece of armament for this band of heroes. Here is the basic plot of the story:

“Naofumi Iwatani, an easygoing Japanese youth, was summoned into a parallel world along with three other young men from parallel universes to become the world’s Cardinal Heroes and fight inter-dimensional hordes of monsters called Waves. Each of the heroes were respectively equipped with their own legendary equipment when summoned. Naofumi happened to receive the Legendary Shield, the sole defensive equipment, while the other heroes received a sword, a spear, and a bow, weapons meant for attack.”

Naofumi overcomes all the obstacles put in front of him and makes some truly amazing friends in the process of his journey. His two main companions are a female, demi-human named Raphtalia and a bird monster he hatches from an egg named Filo. You will be stunned when you see both of the companion stories.

The Rising of the Shield Hero started as a light novel, initially published on the UGC site Shōsetsuka ni Narō and, later published in print. The novel was also turned into a manga before becoming this TV show.

The Rising Of The Shield Hero was playing on Funimation but since they are now Crunchy Roll, I assume that the new season will play there. If you make it all the way through season 1, there is a new season starting on April 6 according to Anime News.
