My parents visited LA this spring and as part of their trip, we spent an afternoon exploring the Miracle Mile museums on Wilshire. One of our first stops was the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
LACMA is a pretty awesome museum. As one could expect, there are pieces in their collection that I have only seen in books or art magazines. Picasso, Kandinsky, Diego Rivera, the list of amazing art goes on an on. I was stunned into silence more than once and a few tears leaked from my eyes. Especially when I saw this one:
The collections are well curated and spaced well to allow for many people to view the pieces.
One of my favorite exhibits was “Found in Translation: Design in California and Mexico, 1915–1985” It is/was a lovely display of how creative inspiration crossed cultures and borders; it included some very inspiring work from designers I really respect.
In our trip around the museum, I fell in love with a jewelry designer’s work, William Spratling, which was featured in several exhibits. The lovely ancient Mexican art inspired jewelry was a joy to behold. I’m a huge fan now and need to hunt down some replica pieces. Though not in the exhibit, here is one of my favorites:
I don’t know if I’ve written about it here, but I love art of chickens. I literally squealed when I turned a corner and saw this:
I think the caption says all you need to know about the lack of depth in my sense of humor that day. Art jokes, that’s pretty fancy. 😉
